Abstract(s)
A nossa leitura incide na análise de três contos de Mia Couto, intitulados “Nas águas do tempo”, “O
cachimbo de Felizbento” e “Sangue da avó, machando a alcatifa”, em que os idosos representam os
guardiões da tradição e os detentores da memória colectiva. A partir da metáfora da cegueira, o primeiro
conto denuncia a ruptura do sujeito moçambicano com o saber ancestral, assumindo a função do
contador de histórias, que constrói a ponte entre os vivos e os mortos. Como voz da lucidez, o ancião
transmite o culto dos antepassados ao neto em diversas travessias no rio, pautadas pelo ritual iniciático.
No segundo conto “O cachimbo de Felizbento”, o idoso resiste aos avanços da guerra civil que o ameaçam
de deslocação. Aferrado ao seu mundo vital, o camponês preserva o seu enraizamento à terra mediante
a imagem da cova e a transformação regeneradora em árvore. No terceiro conto, num simbolismo que
rompe com a fronteira entre o real e o sobrenatural, a avó Carolina cumpre o papel de advertir o
esquecimento das raízes tradicionais através da metáfora do sangue irremovível como signo da ferida dos
anciões excluídos da sociedade capitalista, forçados a enfrentar o choque entre tradição e modernidade.
This reading focuses on the analysis of three short stories by Mia Couto, entitled “The Waters of Time”, “Felizbento’s Smoking Pipe” and “Grandma's Blood, Staining the Carpet”, in which the elderly represent the guardians of tradition and the keepers of collective memory. From the metaphor of blindness, the first story denounces the rupture of the Mozambican subject from ancestral knowledge, assuming the role of the storyteller, who builds the bridge between the living and the dead. As the voice of lucidity, the elder conveys the worship of ancestors to his grandson on several river crossings guided by the initiation ritual. In the second short story, “Felizbento’s Smoking Pipe”, the old man resists the progress of the civil war that threatens him with displacement. Clinging to his vital world, the old peasant maintains his roots in the earth through the image of the pit and the regenerating transformation into a tree. In the third story, in a symbolism that breaks the boundary between the real and the supernatural, Grandmother Carolina fulfils the role of warning against the oblivion of the traditional roots through the metaphor of irremovable blood as a sign of the wound of the elders excluded from capitalist society and forced to face the clash between tradition and modernity.
