A partir da elegia, José Agostinho Baptista recupera a memória da Madeira primordial, reescrevendo a tradição da canção. Num êxtase de sublimação, o poeta cria a utopia de uma terra harmoniosa em fusão com a mulher amada e revitaliza a lenda de Machim como mito da ilha inicial. Numa perspectiva desconstruidora, Baptista questiona os lugares da ilha, marcados pela efemeridade do tempo, a maldição, a desordem da Natureza, a decadência e o crescente progresso da urbanidade. É á através da metáfora do filho pródigo que as palavras da saudade recuperam o fulgor da ilha como lugar de pertença.
From the elegy, José Agostinho Baptista recovers the memory of primordial Madeira by rewriting the song tradition. In a trance of sublimation, the poet creates the utopia of a harmonious land in fusion with the beloved woman and revitalizes the legend of Machim as myth of the initial island. From a deconstructive perspective, Baptista questions the locations of the island marked by the frailty of time, malediction, disorder of Nature, decadence and the increasing progress of urbanity. It is through the metaphor of the prodigal son that the words of yearning recover the island’s glow as a place of belonging.
