- Supporting Students' Mental Health and Academic Success Through Mobile App and IoTPublication . Baras, Karolina; Soares, Luísa; Lucas, Carla Vale; Oliveira, Filipa; Paulo, Norberto Pinto; Barros, ReginaSmartphones have become devices of choice for running studies on health and well-being, especially among young people. When entering college, students often face many challenges, such as adaptation to new situations, establish new interpersonal relationships, heavier workload and shorter deadlines, teamwork assignments and others. In this paper, the results of four studies examining students’ well being and mental health as well as student’s perception of challenges and obstacles they face during their academic journey are presented. In addition, a mobile application that acts as a complement to a successful tutoring project implemented at the authors’ University is proposed. The application allows students to keep their schedules and deadlines in one place while incorporating virtual tutor features. By using both, the events from the student’s calendar and his or her mood indicators, the application sends notifications accordingly. These notifications encompass motivational phrases, time management guidelines, as well as relaxation tips.
- Pilot project for peer tutoring: a case study in a Portuguese universityPublication . Coelho, Cristina Sofia; Faria, Catarina Pereira; Oliveira, Filipa; Lucas, Carla Vale; Vasconcelos, Sónia; Soares, LuísaPurpose – Tutoring or mentoring is a form of mutual and informal learning which has distant origins. This is a way of sharing knowledge and experience which has been proved to be extremely useful in educational settings, particularly where there is a peer that plays the role of tutor. Despite its informal characteristic, tutoring should be a structured process, with defined goals and clear roles for both: tutors and tutees, those who benefit from tutoring. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – As this paper aims to explore a pilot project, it was used as a reflexive and practical methodology, in a case study, analyzing the number of participants attending the project as well as the contents of the training course. Findings – In this first project in a Portuguese university, 35 students attended as candidates to tutor, participating in the training course, showing interest in helping their colleagues. Originality/value – This proposal for a tutoring program in a public higher institution aims to train college students to help other colleagues, giving academic support, helping in the adaptation to academic context, promoting autonomy in learning, sharing effective strategies and helping in maintenance of positive interpersonal relationships. These aspects are very important to promote academic success in higher education.
- Reports of an Addiction: Therapeutic Intervention with a Young Adult with Cannabis DependencePublication . Lucas, Carla Vale; Oliveira, Filipa; Soares, LuísaAbstract: Background and Goals: Cannabis is the most widely illicit substance around the world. Treatment success is predicted by different factors, among which, motivation for changing the behavior is one of these factors. Therefore, identifying the client’s readiness to change is important. Working with clients that are in precontemplation stage of change constitutes a big challenge for therapists. Methods: In this paper, we present the case study of João, a young adult with cannabis use disorder, comorbid with social anxiety. The therapeutic intervention followed the principles of motivational interviewing, highly recommended with clients less ready to change. It also combined techniques from cognitive-behavioral therapy and narrative therapy, to help separate the client from the problem, thus helping him to construct a more fulfilling life. Throughout the article, the subjective viewpoints of the client will be highlighted, in the form of micronarratives written by the client, suggested as therapeutic tasks. Discussion/Results: Several challenges were faced while addressing resistance and ambivalence, early on and throughout treatment. João dropout in the 23rd session, after achieving some therapeutic gains. Changes in his self-talk, documented in the micronarratives, served as indicators that his relationship with cannabis started to change. The therapeutic tasks suggested were important in helping him to increase motivation for change and to write new paths for his life. Conclusion: It is crucial to adjust the therapeutic interventions to the client’s readiness to change, and continuously reflecting about the therapeutic process, addressing moments of disengagement, early on, to increase the probability of behavior change.
- Motivation for therapy: an important ingredient to change?Publication . Soares, Luísa; Oliveira, Filipa; Lemos, Marina S.; Lucas, Carla V.; Botella, Luís; Corbella, SergiWe analyse the levels of motivation for therapy, as well as explore if there are significant differences between the group of clients who drop-out from therapy and those who continue. Is there a relation between the different dimensions of motivation and the way the client perceive the therapeutic environment? 39 dyads of therapist and clients from Portugal participated. The Client motivation for therapy scale, adapted from Pelletier, Tucson and Haddad (1997) and the modified HCCQ from Williams, McGregor, King, Nelson and Glasgow (2005) were administered to the clients in 1st, 3rd , 5 th and 8th session. Significant differences in the intrinsic motivation and amotivation dimension and no significant differences were found, between those who give up/continue psychotherapy (p>.05). Nevertheless it was found a positive significant correlation (rs=.467) between the level of perception of the therapeutic environment and integrated motivation, as well as a negative correlation with amotivation (rs=.521), that is to say, the better the perception of the therapeutic environment, more motivated they are for therapy.
- Benefits of virtual reality based cognitive rehabilitation through simulated activities of daily living: a randomized controlled trial with stroke patientsPublication . Faria, Ana Lúcia; Andrade, Andreia; Soares, Luísa; Bermúdez i Badia, SergiBackground: Stroke is one of the most common causes of acquired disability, leaving numerous adults with cognitive and motor impairments, and affecting patients’ capability to live independently. There is substancial evidence on post-stroke cognitive rehabilitation benefits, but its implementation is generally limited by the use of paper-and-pencil methods, insufficient personalization, and suboptimal intensity. Virtual reality tools have shown potential for improving cognitive rehabilitation by supporting carefully personalized, ecologically valid tasks through accessible technologies. Notwithstanding important progress in VR-based cognitive rehabilitation systems, specially with Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) simulations, there is still a need of more clinical trials for its validation. In this work we present a one-month randomized controlled trial with 18 stroke in and outpatients from two rehabilitation units: 9 performing a VR-based intervention and 9 performing conventional rehabilitation. Methods: The VR-based intervention involved a virtual simulation of a city – Reh@City - where memory, attention, visuo-spatial abilities and executive functions tasks are integrated in the performance of several daily routines. The intervention had levels of difficulty progression through a method of fading cues. There was a pre and postintervention assessment in both groups with the Addenbrooke Cognitive Examination (primary outcome) and the Trail Making Test A and B, Picture Arrangement from WAIS III and Stroke Impact Scale 3.0 (secondary outcomes). Results: A within groups analysis revealed significant improvements in global cognitive functioning, attention, memory, visuo-spatial abilities, executive functions, emotion and overall recovery in the VR group. The control group only improved in self-reported memory and social participation. A between groups analysis, showed significantly greater improvements in global cognitive functioning, attention and executive functions when comparing VR to conventional therapy. Conclusions: Our results suggest that cognitive rehabilitation through the Reh@City, an ecologically valid VR system for the training of ADL’s, has more impact than conventional methods. Trial registration: This trial was not registered because it is a small sample study that evaluates the clinical validity of a prototype virtual reality system.
- Narrative therapy as an innovative approach to anorexia nervosa treatment: a literature reviewPublication . Santos, Petra José Pereira; Soares, Luísa; Faria, Ana Lúcia; Soares, Luísa; dos Santos Faria, Ana LúciaABSTRACT Anorexia is an eating disorder characterized by a morbid fear of gaining weight, excessive restriction of food and intense and exaggerated practice of physical exercise. There are two subtypes of anorexia: restrictive and purgative. Its prevalence is mainly in female adolescents aged 15 to 19 and entails multiple harmful physical, psychological, social, and emotional consequences. Anorexia is portrayed as a multifactorial disorder, requiring a biopsychosocial perspective and a multidisciplinary intervention to address all the affected areas of the individual. In this article, we approach the appliance of Narrative Therapy by White and Epston ((1989). Literate Means to Therapeutic Ends. Dulwich Centre Publications), which advocates that the psychotherapeutic treatment can be carried out together – psychologist, client and family – with the literature supporting it. Anorexia is an egosyntonic disorder associated with a high mortality rate. It should be noted that the cure for anorexia is not granted since there is an increased number of relapses and treatment dropouts. For this reason, an innovative approach like narrative therapy can be approached with promising results.
