- New taxa to the flora of Madeira archipelago islands (Portugal)Publication . Jardim, Roberto; Sequeira, Miguel Menezes de73 new references for 72 taxa of vascular plant are here reported for the Madeira archipelago. 55 not previously recorded for Desertas Islands, 12 to Porto Santo Island and 6 for Madeira Island. Of the 72 taxa, 28 are xenophytes, and 10 are new taxa to the flora of the archipelago (of these 9 are xenophytes). Their native status, taxonomy and distribution are briefly discussed. - Population decline in the critically endangered Musschia isambertoi (Campanulaceae) endemic to Desertas Islands (Madeira Archipelago) calls for urgent conservation managementPublication . M.Macaronesian islands display a high degree of plant endemicity and correspond to some of the most threatened biodiversity hotspots due to several human driven impacts such as habitat loss, invasive species, overexploitation or climate change. The conservation status of the largest of the two known population of Musschia isambertoi M. Seq., R. Jardim, Magda Silva and L. Carvalho (Campanulaceae) was assessed recently. Field work was done in June 2018 in “Porto das Moças” Deserta Grande (Madeira Archipelago, Portugal), the locus typicus, where in 2006 close to 30 plants were detected with a high variation of age/size between individuals comprising both fully flowering and non-flowering adult plants as well as seedlings, and thus corresponding to a healthy population. This study assesses population size, age and plant size, and genetic, as well as floristic diversity. The total area of the site corresponds to approximately 1500 square meters. Ten individuals were detected, all corresponding to young seedlings not exceeding 15 cm high, and exhibiting approximately the same size and numbers of leaves (4–8). No adult plants or remains of adult plants were seen. Ecological data and direct herbivory evidence suggest that perennial plants are subjected to elimination during the short summer by the feral goat population. Mo lecular data based on ISSR markers show that the nine sampled individuals (out of ten individuals found) are genetically identical, possibly resulting from one parental plant. Results clearly suggest that Musschia isambertoi is very close to extinction. Urgent conservation measures are imperative and should include the immediate fencing of the population followed by the elimination of feral goats from Deserta Grande. The elimination of feral goats was initiated in 1996 (LIFE95 NAT/P/000125, 383,467.00 €) but stopped due to inappropriate conser vation policies of the former Services of the Natural Park of Madeira.

Carvalho (Campanulaceae), a new species from the Madeira Archipelago (Portugal). Anales Jard. Bot. Madrid 64(2): 135-146. A new species of Musschia Dumort. (Campanulaceae), endemic from Madeira Archipelago (Portugal), is described as Musschia isambertoi M. Seq., R. Jardim, M. Silva & L. Carvalho. Both veg etative and reproductive structures have been studied and are remarkably distinct from the recognized species [M. aurea (L. f.) Dumort. and M. wollastonii Lowe]. A full description and a diag nosis are included as well as line art, color drawings and pictures. Diagnostic characters are discussed and compared with those of the closely related species. The new species has a very restricted distribution occurring in two isolated populations in the Deserta Grande Island (Madeira Archipelago, Portugal). Nomenclatural aspects on the genus Musschia Dumort. are discussed and a di agnostic key for the species is also included.
- Teucrium francoi M. Seq., Capelo, J.C. Costa & R. Jardim, a new species of Teucrium gr. scorodonia (Lamiceae) from MadeiraPublication . Seq., Capelo, J.C. Costa & R. Jardim. Morphologically close to species of Teucrium gr. scorodonia [T. scorodonia L., T. pseudoscorodonia Desf., T. siculum (Raf.) Guss. and T. kotschyanum Poech], it exhibits, nonetheless, some distinct diagnostic characters. The indumentum density and type of hairs of T. francoi are clearly distinct from those of related species, as are the shape and dimensions of the leaves and bracts, calyx, and corolla, which are all taken as taxonomically significant diagnostic features. A diagnosis and a distribution map are presented for this new species. Morphology, ecology, biogeography, and conservation issues are discussed. Teucrium francoi, which is an endemic from Madeira (Portugal), is to be found mostly in the scope of the association Teucrio francoi– Origanetum virentis J.C. Costa, Capelo, Jardim, Sequeira, Lousã & Rivas-Martínez, but also occurs in somewhat humid habitats, such as open stands of Rosa mandonii Déségl. associated with small streams

Although formerly included in A. g
