    This paper aims at studying the characteristics of humour in Literatures in Portuguese, in tales, short narratives and novels, so as to uncover the traits of a Portuguese humoristic tradition of its own. The texts under scope have in common the problematic of the national profile approached in a humoristic way. The current analysis draws on a corpus of Portuguese texts by João Ubaldo Ribeiro (Brazil), Pepetela, (Angola), and Germano de Almeida (Cape Verde). The authors follow the Portuguese Literature tradition of using humour as a cognitive and ontological instrument, as a privileged form of knowing the individual and the collective community to which they belong. Through the creation of various narrative situations, which depict the encounter between national characters and foreigners (a football game, in the case of the Brazilian text; a criminal investigation involving agents from Angola and the FBI, in Pepetela’s novel; the return from the United States of a Cape Verdean immigrant and his attempts to modernize his homeland in the American way), the novelists reflect upon their identity using a satirical perspective. Alterity fosters the mirror in which the “one” watching the “other” (most times making the foreigner look ridicule and less cunning than himself) acknowledges his own national characteristics and situation in the world. Humour is the possibility of finding the inner voice “us” and opens up the way to change through laughter.

    In Brazil, during the XIX century, the historical romance is part of a generational program that aims to the creation of the Brazilian literature, unique and independent from the Portuguese literature, and profoundly linked to the people, seen by the intellectuals as a new race born in the tropics. José de Alencar unites effectively in his books the historical with the literary and esthetical movements of “indianism” and “nativism”, picturing the encounter of the Portuguese and the Indian as the mythical birth of the Brazilian. The names the author gives his Indian characters testify not only his will to capture the peculiar relationship of the Indians with the edenic nature, through the creation of names that function as true images, but also the anthropological and linguistic knowledge of a culture seen as being at the same level as the European. The Indian names tell also the story of the suffering and annihilation of the race and the birth of a new one.

    Quando, nel 1946, al medico e intellettuale António de Almeida Garrett, è proposto di coordinare un’antologia del racconto umoristico portoghese, lui si pone la domanda su quali siano le caratteristiche più rappresentative dello humour nella Letteratura portoghese. La scelta di Camilo Castelo Branco (“o trocista implacável”), Eça de Queiroz (“o elegante caricaturista”), Ramalho Ortigão (“o da crítica graciosa”), Guerra Junqueiro (“o da universal piedade amassada com sarcasmo”) e Fialho de Almeida (“o estranho pintor satírico”), privilegia dimensioni che Almeida Garrett considera come identificative di un humour nazionale: il ricorso alla caricatura, la critica di tono satirico, il sarcasmo pietoso, l’umorismo impegnato e compromesso con la società, la gioia del giullare che ride felice anche delle tristezze. Queste caratteristiche sono infatti quelle che, per la loro iscrizione nella tradizione letteraria europea dell’Umorismo, restituiscono la dimensione di quegli scrittori come appartenenti alla grande letteratura europea e in dialogo con essa; e, considerate nel suo insieme e all’interno della letteratura portoghese, possono contribuire ad una riflessione sull’esistenza di una visione specifica dell’umorismo. When, in 1946, to the doctor and intellectual António de Almeida Garrett, is proposed to coordinate an anthology of Portuguese humorous stories, he raises the question of the most representative characteristics of humour in Portuguese literature. The choice of Camilo Castelo Branco ("o trocista implacável"), Eça de Queiroz ("o caricaturista elegante"), Ramalho Ortigão ("o da crítica graciosa"), Guerra Junqueiro ("o da universal piedade amassada com sarcasmo") and Fialho de Almeida ("o estranho pintor satírico"), favors dimensions that he considers that identify the national humor: the use of caricature, the criticism with a satyrical tone, the sarcasm with pity, the humor committed and compromised with society, the joy of the jester laughing happily, even of sadness. These features are in fact those which, for its inscription in the European literary tradition of humour give the dimension of these writers as part of the great European literature and in dialogue with it, and, taken as a whole and within the Portuguese literature, they can contribute to a reflection on the existence of a unique and national vision of humour.
