Abstract(s)
The fight against illiteracy is an effort that needs to be developed with the participation of all stakeholders. The number of people affected by this scourge, which is still very high, reaching one in five people across Europe. It is an insidious phenomenon, because it is invisible and yet underestimated, and truly quite omnipresent. In order to win the fight against illiteracy, it is essential that actions take into account not only the difficulties of children, but also those of their parents, who are themselves often affected by this problem. Indeed, taking into account the difficulties in some families has a major impact on the ability of children and young people to progress. Another equally fundamental focus is training for all who will need to be in touch with those affected by illiteracy. In this sense, it is important to focus on lifelong learning, whether formal, non- -formal and informal. In the context of formal training we highlight the courses of Adult Education and Training (EFA). These courses aim to raise the educational and vocational levels of the Portuguese adult population through an integrated offer of education and training that enhances their employability conditions and certifies the skills acquired throughout their lives. EFA courses are an excellent vehicle for combating adult illiteracy because they enhance learning based on flexible pathways and help adults acquire indispensable skills for everyday life. In this communication we will give as an example the experience of EFA courses in the Elementary School of the 2nd and 3rd Cycles da Torre.
