Abstract(s)
A ilha da Madeira, e a cidade do Funchal em particular, desde o início do seu povoamento,
caracteriza-se pela sua translocalidade, sobretudo associada à cultura açucareira. Interessa, pois,
conhecer as relações translocais, interlinguísticas e interculturais, associadas à terminologia
açucareira no Atlântico, dado que a cidade do Funchal foi o epicentro da circulação de coisas e
palavras e da mobilidade de pessoas, ao estar numa posição estratégica entre o Mediterrâneo e o Atlântico, convertendo-se na cidade do açúcar ou “ouro branco” da altura. Foi também a partir da
Madeira que o vocabulário da cultura açucareira, constituído fundamentalmente por unidades
terminológicas complexas que denominam qualidades de açúcar e técnicas da produção açucareira,
se expandiu no Atlântico, nomeadamente para Canárias, Cabo Verde, S. Tomé e Príncipe e Brasil,
configurando a realidade do atual património linguístico e cultural comum aos dois lados do
Atlântico, como confirma a documentação oral contemporânea, recolhida através de questionários
semântico-lexicais nas áreas geográficas referidas, onde ainda subsiste a produção açucareira
tradicional.
The island of Madeira, and the city of Funchal in particular, since the beginning of its settlement, is characterized by its translocality, especially associated with the sugar culture. It is therefore interesting to know the translocal, interlinguistic and intercultural, relations associated with the sugar terminology in the Atlantic, since the city of Funchal was the epicenter of the circulation of things and words and the mobility of people, being in a strategic position between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic, becoming the city of sugar or "white gold" of the height. It was also from Madeira that the vocabulary of the sugar culture, consisting mainly of complex terminological units that denominate sugar qualities and techniques of sugar production, expanded in the Atlantic, namely to the Canaries, Cape Verde, S. Tome and Principe and Brazil, shaping the reality of the current linguistic and cultural heritage common to both sides of the Atlantic, as confirmed by contemporary oral documentation, collected through semantic-lexical questionnaires in the geographical areas referred to, where traditional sugar production still exists.
