Este estudo visa contribuir para a discussão do desenvolvimento epistemológico na adultez emergente. Consiste na descrição do desenvolvimento epistemológico dos estudantes do ensino superior e na identificação de variáveis associadas. Neste sentido, são apresentados dois estudos realizados na Universidade da Madeira, em 2010 e 2016, com 295 estudantes no estudo 1 e 232 estudantes no estudo 2, do 1º e 2º ciclo de diferentes áreas de formação académica. Nos resultados não se verificou a progressão desenvolvimental esperada em termos de um pensamento absolutista para um pensamento mais relativista, mas sim um aumento do absolutismo conforme se avança na formação académica. Em ambos os estudos, os resultados mostraram que o desenvolvimento epistemológico dos estudantes varia em função de variáveis sociais e académicas.
