    さDe ケue foヴマa se pode マaxiマizaヴ o poteミIial da Iヴiaミça eマ teヴマos do seu deseミ┗ol┗iマeミto sóIio-Iogミiti┗o?ざ Partiu-se da pertinência desta questão e da consideração de que as relações entre as habilidades sócio-cognitivas e comportamentos pró-sociais podem ser mediadas por variáveis situacionais, para alicerçar a construção de um programa de promoção do desenvolvimento sócio-cognitivo nas crianças, dirigido a dois grupos-alvo: pais com filhos até os 12 anos e crianças dos 6-12 anos, em programas de intervenção paralelos, visando maximizar o potencial da criança em termos do desenvolvimento de respostas empáticas e interacções pro-sociais. O presente artigo pretende, assim, apresentar o referido programa, dando especial ênfase aos módulos de intervenção destinados às crianças.
  • Supporting Students' Mental Health and Academic Success Through Mobile App and IoT

    Smartphones have become devices of choice for running studies on health and well-being, especially among young people. When entering college,students often face many challenges,such as adaptation to new situations, establish new interpersonal relationships, heavier workload and shorter deadlines, teamwork assignments and others. In this paper, the results of four studies examining students’ well being and mental health as well as student’s perception of challenges and obstacles they face during their academic journey are presented. In addition, a mobile application that acts as a complement to a successful tutoring project implemented at the authors’ University is proposed. The application allows students to keep their schedules and deadlines in one place while incorporating virtual tutor features. By using both, the events from the student’s calendar and his or her mood indicators, the application sends notifications accordingly. These notifications encompass motivational phrases, time management guidelines, as well as relaxation tips.
  • Psychological Symptomatology and Loneliness in a College Students Sample: What New Trends can be Developed to Better Help These Students?

    We explore psychological symptomatology of college students in Madeira University, Portugal and examine socio-demographic variables associated with psychological health. We intend to answer the questions: Does gender differ in terms of symptomatology? Which psychological symptomatology is more common? Is there a relation between severity of symptomatology and loneliness? We administered the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised and UCLA Loneliness Scale to 300 students, aged 18 to 52. Women reported higher levels of symptomatology. We also noted a positive correlation between symptomatology and loneliness, which could mean that the more severe are the psychological symptoms, lonelier student’s feel. We aim to suggest interventions that best suit higher education purpose and students, promote their adjustment and well-being.
  • Pilot project for peer tutoring: a case study in a Portuguese university

    Purpose – Tutoring or mentoring is a form of mutual and informal learning which has distant origins. This is a way of sharing knowledge and experience which has been proved to be extremely useful in educational settings, particularly where there is a peer that plays the role of tutor. Despite its informal characteristic, tutoring should be a structured process, with defined goals and clear roles for both: tutors and tutees, those who benefit from tutoring. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – As this paper aims to explore a pilot project, it was used as a reflexive and practical methodology, in a case study, analyzing the number of participants attending the project as well as the contents of the training course. Findings – In this first project in a Portuguese university, 35 students attended as candidates to tutor, participating in the training course, showing interest in helping their colleagues. Originality/value – This proposal for a tutoring program in a public higher institution aims to train college students to help other colleagues, giving academic support, helping in the adaptation to academic context, promoting autonomy in learning, sharing effective strategies and helping in maintenance of positive interpersonal relationships. These aspects are very important to promote academic success in higher education.
  • Reports of an Addiction: Therapeutic Intervention with a Young Adult with Cannabis Dependence

    Abstract: Background and Goals: Cannabis is the most widely illicit substance around the world. Treatment success is predicted by different factors, among which, motivation for changing the behavior is one of these factors. Therefore, identifying the client’s readiness to change is important. Working with clients that are in precontemplation stage of change constitutes a big challenge for therapists. Methods: In this paper, we present the case study of João, a young adult with cannabis use disorder, comorbid with social anxiety. The therapeutic intervention followed the principles of motivational interviewing, highly recommended with clients less ready to change. It also combined techniques from cognitive-behavioral therapy and narrative therapy, to help separate the client from the problem, thus helping him to construct a more fulfilling life. Throughout the article, the subjective viewpoints of the client will be highlighted, in the form of micronarratives written by the client, suggested as therapeutic tasks. Discussion/Results: Several challenges were faced while addressing resistance and ambivalence, early on and throughout treatment. João dropout in the 23rd session, after achieving some therapeutic gains. Changes in his self-talk, documented in the micronarratives, served as indicators that his relationship with cannabis started to change. The therapeutic tasks suggested were important in helping him to increase motivation for change and to write new paths for his life. Conclusion: It is crucial to adjust the therapeutic interventions to the client’s readiness to change, and continuously reflecting about the therapeutic process, addressing moments of disengagement, early on, to increase the probability of behavior change.
  • Motivation for therapy: an important ingredient to change?

    We analyse the levels of motivation for therapy, as well as explore if there are significant differences between the group of clients who drop-out from therapy and those who continue. Is there a relation between the different dimensions of motivation and the way the client perceive the therapeutic environment? 39 dyads of therapist and clients from Portugal participated. The Client motivation for therapy scale, adapted from Pelletier, Tucson and Haddad (1997) and the modified HCCQ from Williams, McGregor, King, Nelson and Glasgow (2005) were administered to the clients in 1st, 3rd , 5 th and 8th session. Significant differences in the intrinsic motivation and amotivation dimension and no significant differences were found, between those who give up/continue psychotherapy (p>.05). Nevertheless it was found a positive significant correlation (rs=.467) between the level of perception of the therapeutic environment and integrated motivation, as well as a negative correlation with amotivation (rs=.521), that is to say, the better the perception of the therapeutic environment, more motivated they are for therapy.
  • Programa de Promoção do Desenvolvimento Sócio-Cognitivo da Criança Parte 2: Intervenção com os Pais

    A cognição social é deveras importante para uma interacção social bem-sucedida, e consequentemente, para o equilíbrio psicossocial dos indivíduos. Considerando a importância de tal, foi construído um programa de promoção do desenvolvimento sócio-cognitivo das crianças, que aposta na resiliência moral e na competência social. Destina-se a dois grupos-alvo, com intervenções paralelas: pais de crianças até aos 12 anos e crianças dos 7 aos 12 anos. Abordam-se com maior ênfase os módulos de intervenção dirigidos aos pais, respondendo a ケuestõesà Ioマoà さQueà iマpaItoà tZマà as interacções e as experiências proporcionadas pelas pessoas mais próximas da criança no seu desenvolvimento sócio-cognitivo e de que modo é possível maximizar o seu poteミIial?ざà Oà oHjeIti┗oà fiミalà Yà eミfatizaヴà aà iマpoヴt>ミIiaà doà autoconhecimento dos pais e a urgência da estimulação das competências das crianças.
