- Analyzing the effects of competitive fatigue on body composition and functional capacities of youth elite handball playersPublication . Martins, Francisco; França, Cíntia; Sarmento, Hugo; Przednowek, Krzysztof; Śliż, Maciej; Campos, Pedro; Lopes, Helder; Marques, Adilson; Gouveia, Élvio Rúbio; Pestana Martins, João Francisco; França, Cíntia; Sarmento, Hugo; Pereira Campos, Pedro Filipe; Lopes, Helder; Marques, Adilson; Gouveia, Élvio RúbioHandball demands intense movements like rapid direction changes and physical contact. Consecutive competitions expose player fatigue and weaknesses due to the sport’s exhaustive nature. Therefore, the aims of this study are twofold: (i) to investigate the impact of competitive fatigue on the body composition of youth elite handball players, and (ii) to analyze the impact of concentrated competition on their functional capacity performance. Seventeen young male handball players (age: 16.2 years, height; 177.8 cm, body mass: 73.0 kg) were assessed twenty-four hours before (TM1) and after the competitive period (TM2) in body composition, static strength, lower- and upper-body explosive strength, speed, agility, balance, and flexibility indicators. A Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test was conducted to assess differences in body composition and functional capacities assessment between TM1 and TM2. Regarding results, body mass significantly increased in TM2 (p < 0.01), while increases in waist circumference and body fat percentage were not statistically significant. Functional capacity assessments revealed a significant decline in jumping performance (CMJ and SJ; p ≤ 0.01). Speed and agility assessments showed worse performance in TM2, significantly increasing 30 m sprint time (p ≤ 0.01). Balance indicators showed no significant differences, with mixed results in performance across different conditions. In sum, evaluating vertical jumps and long-distance maximum speed (i.e., 30 meters) could be valid tests for measuring and controlling fatigue in young elite handball players. Future research should regularly monitor young handballers after the competition to analyze the entire fatigue recovery process.

- Association between the Duration of the Active Commuting to and from School, and Cognitive Performance in Urban Portuguese AdolescentsPublication . Rodrigues, Ana José Aguiar; Antunes, Hélio; Alves, Ricardo; Correia, Ana Luisa; Lopes, Helder; Sabino, Bebiana; Marques, Adilson; Ihle, Andreas; Gouveia, Élvio Rúbiohis study aimed to analyze the differences between active commuting to school (ACS) and non-ACS in cognitive performance (CP), and the association of ACS duration with CP. This cross-sectional study included 370 adolescents (males n = 170), with a mean age of 15.28 ± 2.25 years. CP was assessed through an interview, and ACS, extracurricular physical activity, and socioeconomic status was assessed by self-report. Body composition was assessed using the FitnessGram test battery. One in two adolescents did ACS (51.6%). ACS was associated with boys (53.9%), younger adolescents (14.91 ± 2.15 vs. 15.69 ± 2.29), those having school social support (55.0%), and those doing one or more extracurricular physical activities (53.6%), compared to non-ACS participants (p < 0.05). The analysis of covariance, after controlling for age, sex, school social support, and participation in extracurricular physical activity, showed an effect of ACS on the total cognitive score (F(2,362) = 3.304, p < 0.05). The CP was higher in adolescents with more than 30 min of ACS than non-ACS (p < 0.05). The influence of ACS duration can be seen in the dimensions of inductive reasoning (ß = 0.134, t = 2.587, p < 0.05) and working memory (ß = 0.130, t = 2.525, p < 0.05). The role of ACS for CP, as well as guidelines for future research, are discussed.
- Associations of physical activity with body composition and aerobic capacity in adults with Down syndromePublication . Rodrigues, Ana; Rodrigues, Ana; Antunes, Hélio; Antunes, Hélio; Alves, Ricardo; Alves, Ricardo; Velosa Barreto Ferreira Alves, José Ricardo; Sousa, Duarte; Sousa, Duarte; Lopes, Helder; Lopes, Helder; Prudente, João; Prudente, João FilipeThe characterization of physical activity profile and the relation with health indicators is still an issue to explore in populations with Down Syndrome. With the development of this study we intend to: (i) describe the levels of physical activity, aerobic capacity and body composition of participants, considering gender and age, (ii) analyse the association between physical activity levels and aerobic capacity and body composition. In this study participated 26 subjects (16 males and 10 females) with Down syndrome, aged between 19 and 41 years (27.33±11.93). All participants were evaluated in physical activity using a pedometer (one week), aerobic capacity (AAHPERD, 1998), weight and height. Reduced levels of physical activity (4073.71±1217.69 steps/day) and aerobic capacity (3.09±.90 minutes) were observed among participants. The prevalence of obesity was 36.4% and 13.6% overweight, 50% of the participants presented the recommended weight. However, none of the analysed parameters shows differences between sexes (p>.05), nor association between age and the indicators evaluated (p>.05). Physical activity has been shown to be associated with: (i) body mass index (r=-.747, p<.001) and (ii) with cardiorespiratory capacity (r=.458, p=.019). It is necessary to develop programs and policies to promote physical activity in this population, in order to prevent the development of various pathologies.
- The athlete’s perception of parents behaviors in sport context: a study in youth handball players of the Madeira Handball AssociationPublication . Sousa, Duarte; Sousa, Duarte; Cardoso, Américo; Ramos Cardoso, Américo; Rodrigues, Ana; Rodrigues, Ana; Noite, João; Lopes, Helder; Fernando, Catarina; Fernando, Catarina; Prudente, João; Prudente, João FilipeThe participation of parents in their children's sports is very important. However, many parents end up having negative and deviant behaviours in sports and social context, generating this participation some controversy and misunderstandings. With this study, we intend to assess the perception of the athletes about the behaviour of the parents in the sport context, considering the demographic characteristics of the athletes (gender and age). The sample is composed by young handball players from the Madeira Handball Association, aged 9-16 years of both sexes (n=284, male n=122, female n=162) registered by ten clubs and with a minimum of one year of organized sports practice. For the collection of data, a questionnaire previously constructed and duly validated was used. The results confirm the perception of the role of parents in supporting their children 's sports practices, as well as motivating them for the sport. There is also a perception of the young players of a pressure exerted by the parents in obtaining immediate results and little appreciation of the progress of learning.
